Jake Vogel, Austin Gauthier Among Dodgers Prospects Eligible For 2024 MLB Rule 5 Draft

One of the most important dates on the MLB offseason calendar is Tuesday, Nov. 19, which represents the deadline for the Los Angeles Dodgers and other teams to set their 40-man roster in advance of the 2024 Rule 5 Draft.

This year’s Rule 5 Draft will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 11, to conclude the annual the Winter Meetings in Dallas, Texas.

The Dodgers protected Nick Frasso, Landon Knack and Hunter Feduccia from the 2023 Rule 5 Draft, and the latter two ended up making their MLB debut this past season.

However, the Dodgers lost prospects Carson Taylor and Darlin Pinales to the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks, respectively, during the Minor League phase of the Draft.

Players signed at age 18 or younger become Rule 5 eligible after five seasons, while those who signed at age 19 or older are eligible within four seasons.

Any player picked during the first round of the Draft must remain on the selecting team’s Major League roster for the entire season or be offered back to the previous club. If they are offered back, the original team may choose to take them back or allow the selecting organization to keep them.

That occurred with the Dodgers during the 2022 season as Gus Varland was returned by the Milwaukee Brewers. Varland appeared in seven games with the Dodgers this year before being claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox.

Picks in the Rule 5 Draft are in reverse order from that year’s standings. Selecting teams pay $100,000 to the club from which a player was taken from. Teams are not required to make a selection.

Austin Gauthier is the most notable player from the Dodgers organization who is eligible for the 2024 Rule 5 Draft as he’s currently ranked their No. 24 prospect by MLB Pipeline.

Gauthier batted .253/.374/.359 with 19 doubles, five triples, six home runs and 48 RBI in 130 games between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City this year.

Also eligible is Jake Vogel, who was selected by the Dodgers in the third round of the 2020 MLB Draft.
