The Los Angeles Dodgers and the City of Los Angeles honored Hall of Fame Spanish broadcaster Jaime Jarrín, who is in his 64th and final season with the club.

The ceremony was held this past Saturday, roughly one hour prior to a game against the Colorado Rockies. Among those in attendance included Senator Alex Padilla, Mayor Eric Garcetti, Councilmember Gil Cedillo, Fernando Valenzuela, Pepe Yñiguez and Edward James Olmos.

Singer and actor Jaime Camil sang the national anthem and Jarrín’s grandson Stefan threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

During the ceremony, Jarrín was presented with a key to the city, which is only the fourth one Garcetti has given out as Mayof of L.A. In addition, Oct. 1 was declared as Jaime Jarrín day in Los Angeles.

The Dodgers also announced his broadcast booth located in the Vin Scully Press Box was renamed to the “Jaime Jarrín Spanish broadcast booth.”

“It’s going to be a great night,” Jarrín said before the ceremony. “I know many, many friends are coming. The Dodgers have given me two suites for people I wanted to invite, so it’s going to be very special.

“I will speak very briefly, because the people in the ballpark already know exactly what I have been doing for 64 years, so it’s very rude to talk about me. I will just take the opportunity to thank everybody for the things they have done for me.”

Jaime Jarrín taking new role with Dodgers

Before the on-field ceremony at Dodger Stadium, the Spanish voice of the Dodgers spoke with media and revealed plans to remain with the organization in a new role as an ambassador representing the team within the Latino community.

“They have asked me to be with them, so I’m going to stay for two years,” Jarrín said. “They wanted me for more than two years, but let’s see.

“I’m sure my love for the Dodgers is not going to end this year. After 64 years, I’ve really fallen in love with baseball and the Dodgers. They have been great with me. They have supported me, they have given me an opportunity. The Dodgers always were behind me.

“They treated me with respect. One thing I can tell you is I have never had any problem with anybody. I have been very fortunate to have really professional colleagues. They have been great.”
