UPDATE (July 30, 3 p.m. PT): Los Angeles Dodgers traded Thayron Liranzo and Trey Sweeney to the Detroit Tigers for Jack Flaherty.

Jack Flaherty is one of the top players expected to be traded ahead of the July 30 deadline, and the Detroit Tigers are receiving significant interest in the right-hander.

The cost for starters has been significant, but Flaherty is one of the few impact arms available. The Los Angeles Dodgers have already been connected to Flaherty as part of their search for rotation help.

However, they face more competition for his services. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Dodgers are joined by the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox in their pursuit of the right-hander.

Once a top prospect for the St. Louis Cardinals, Flaherty became the ace of their staff during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, when he combined for a 3.01 ERA over 347.1 innings pitched.

However, Injuries derailed his career a bit, and from the 2020-23 seasons, he posted a 4.42 ERA over 299 innings.

He signed a one-year prove it deal in the offseason and has rebounded in a big way.

The right-hander is 7-5 with a 2.95 ERA, 3.10 FIP and 0.96 WHIP in 18 starts this year. Flaherty additionally has a 32% strikeout rate that is on track to be the best of his career, and he has limited walks at a 4.6% rate.

He will be the top-right hander moved and the trade deadline, and could be the best pitcher moved unless the Chicago White Sox end up dealing Garrett Crochet.

Flaherty is set to become a free agent again at the conclusion of the season, making him a rental for whichever team acquires him.

What will Jack Flaherty cost in a trade?

Considering the trades that have already be completed for starting pitchers this week, Flaherty is going to come at a high cost.

Yusei Kikuchi and Trevor Rogers both netted significant prospects in return, and neither have the same talent as Flaherty, despite some encouraging data for the pair.

It would not be surprising to see Flaherty land at least two of a club’s top-10 prospects.
