Tony Cingrani To Transferred 60-Day Injured List To Clear Room For Tony Gonsolin On Dodgers’ 40-Man Roster

The Los Angeles Dodgers transferred Tony Cingrani to the 60-day injured list on Wednesday in a corresponding move for the addition of Tony Gonsolin to the 40-man roster. Will Smith was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room on the active roster.

With Rich Hill landing on the 10-day injured list last week due to a strained flexor tendon, the Dodgers have adjusted their starting rotation the first time through.

Stripling filled in for Hill on Tuesday, and now Gonsolin is taking the mound as a means of providing regular members of the rotation with additional rest.

Gonsolin has made eight starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, going 1-1 with a 2.77 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, 31 strikeouts and 13 walks in 26 innings. The 25-year-old is making his MLB debut against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Cingrani, who went into Spring Training this year expecting to be a key contributor out of the bullpen for the Dodgers, has not and will not throw a single pitch this season.

The left-hander went down with a shoulder issue towards the end of spring that caused him to begin the season on the 10-day injured list. He began making progress in his recovery and appeared a few Minor League rehab assignment games, but suffered a setback and was forced to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery in the middle of June.

Cingrani is set to reach free agency this winter, so he may have thrown his last pitch in a Dodgers uniform. In 52 games across two seasons with Los Angeles, Cingrani pitched to a 3.86 ERA, 2.11 FIP and 1.10 WHIP while striking out 64 and walking 12 in 42 innings.

With Cingrani lost for the season, and some of the inconsistency from other left-handers Scott Alexander, Ferguson and Urias, it’s believed the Dodgers will target that type of relief pitcher at the July 31 trade deadline.
