This day in Los Angeles Dodgers history saw a scoring record set, manager Walter Alston get ejected twice in one day, and Pee Wee Reese reach a personal milestone while the team was still in Brooklyn.

On July 21, 1956, Reese went 2-for-5 with two RBI in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Although it came in a losing effort, Reese became one of five active players at the time to collect 2,000 career hits.

Reese was traded to the Dodgers in 1939 and became their everyday shortstop with the start of the 1941 season. He played a pivotal role in helping them secure their first National League pennant in 21 years and spent 16 seasons with the team.

Reese batted a career .269/.366/.377 with 330 doubles, 80 triples, 126 home runs, 885 RBI and 232 stolen bases across 2,166 games.

Reese is the Dodgers franchise leader with 2,014 games at shortstop, and he additionally holds records in runs scored (1,338) and walks (1,210).

Also in that July 1956 game, Junior Gilliam set an MLB record with 12 assists from second base.

Walter Alston ejected in doubleheader

Also on this day in Dodgers history, Alston was ejected from both games of a doubleheader. The Dodgers were playing the Milwaukee Braves on July 21, 1973, when Alston was tossed twice in one day.

Alston finished with 37 career ejections over his 23 seasons as manager.

Dodgers scoring record

On July 21, 2001, the Dodgers routed the Colorado Rockies, 22-7, for their most runs scored since the 1943 Brooklyn team had 23.

The Dodgers franchise record for most runs in a single game is 25, achieved May 20 and June 24, 1896, and again on September 23, 1901.

The 2021 Dodgers matched the Los Angeles franchise record with a 22-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium on July 10.
