On August 17, 1992, Kevin Gross threw a no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants in a 2-0 win for the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The historic performance came on the night of his wife Tamara’s birthday and helped L.A. avoid their first four-game sweep at home by the Giants in 69 years.

Gross’s no-hitter was the 18th in Dodgers history and the franchise’s sixth against San Francisco.

The Downey, California, native lost his bid for a perfect game in the second inning when he walked Cory Snyder. Gross issued two free passes during the outing and hit a batter in the ninth.

Robby Thompson nearly led off the top of the eighth with the Giants’ only hit of the night as his line drive forced Jose Offerman to break to his right for a catch at shortstop.

Gross at one point retired 19 batters in a row and set down 22 of the final 23 hitters faced. The Dodgers scored runs in the second and fourth innings, on rookie Eric Karros’ home run and an RBI single from Henry Rodriguez.

The 1992 season was Gross’s second with the Dodgers after signing a three-year, $6.4 million contract in December 1990. He finished 8-13 with a 3.17 ERA, 3.11 FIP and 1.27 WHIP in 204.2 innings pitched across 34 games (30 starts) that year.

In 15 seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, Montreal Expos, Dodgers, Texas Rangers and Anaheim Angels, Gross went a combined 142-158 with a 4.11 ERA and 1,727 strikeouts in 2,487.2 innings pitched.

Dodgers winning streak

Also on this day in 2013, Clayton Kershaw pitched a gem that helped the Dodgers earn a 5-0 victory over the Phillies and extend their winning streak to 10 games for the first time since 2006.

Kershaw allowed just three hits and collected eight strikeouts across eight scoreless innings. He lowered his ERA to 1.80 after the performance and went on to win his second National League Cy Young Award that season.

The Dodgers improved to 42-8 over their last 50 games, which tied the 1941 New York Yankees and 1942 St. Louis Cardinals for the best record in that span of games since 1900. The 2017 Dodgers topped that mark when they went 43-7 over a 50-game stretch.
