This Day In Dodgers History: First Triple Play Turned At Dodger Stadium

On June 13, 1998, the Los Angeles Dodgers turned the first triple play at Dodger Stadium in a 4-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

With runners on first and second base in the top of the fifth inning, Darren Dreifort fielded a bunt attempt by Kurt Abbott and threw it to shortstop Jose Vizcaino for the start of a 1-6-4 double play.

Eric Young, who was covering first base, then fired the ball to Bobby Bonilla and nailed Jamey Wright as he tried to advance to third base.

Unfortunately for the Dodgers, they went on to suffer a 4-2 loss. The Rockies took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and went up by four runs in the sixth before the Dodgers managed to score in the bottom half.

It was only the second triple play for the Dodgers since moving to L.A. in 1958. They previously turned one against the Atlanta Braves on June 15, 1996, during a game at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

Since accomplishing the rare feat against the Rockies, the Dodgers have turned only one additional triple play, which came on April 15, 2012, in a matchup with the San Diego Padres.

L.A. was also on the wrong end of triple plays against the Cleveland Indians and New York Mets during the 2014 season.

Dodgers triple play history

Prior to relocating to L.A., the Dodgers turned 19 triple plays during their days in Brooklyn. They most notably turned two within eight days of each other on May 21 and 29, 1890, during their inaugural season in the National League.

The Dodgers went without a triple play from 1949 until 1996.
