Teoscar Hernández Trade Rumors: Dodgers ‘Kicking The Tires’

Teoscar Hernández has played a key role in the Los Angeles Dodgers winning back-to-back World Series championships, but his future with the team remains uncertain.

Hernández regressed at the plate this year and battled multiple injuries, while his defense in right field was a liability at times.

There have been multiple reports suggesting Hernández could be on the move this offseason, though Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes downplayed the possibility.

Even with Gomes’ recent comments, the Dodgers seemingly remain engaged with other teams about a potential Hernández trade, per Katie Woo and Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic:

The Dodgers continue to “kick the tires” on trading Teoscar Hernández, a league source said, though general manager Brandon Gomes said Monday that trading the right fielder “doesn’t feel likely.”

Hernández, who recently turned 33, hit .247/.284/.454 with 29 doubles, 25 home runs and 89 RBI in 134 games this past season.

Excluding deferred salary, Hernández has two years and north of $46 million remaining on his contract. His deal with the Dodgers included a $23 million signing bonus, $23.5 million in deferred salary, and $15 million team option for 2028 or a $6.5 million buyout.

Given his age and contractual status, trading Hernández would theoretically allow for the Dodgers to get younger in their position group and improve outfield defense. However, Hernández is also a power bat who is capable of bringing balance to a group of Dodgers position players that heavily leans left-handed.

Already needing to fill an outfield spot, it would be difficult to envision the Dodgers trading Hernández without receiving an everyday starter in return or having an immediate solution looming.

Royals interested in Teoscar Hernández trade

With Hernández apparently on the trade block, the Kansas City Royals have interest in a potential deal.

The Royals have been focused on adding outfielders this offseason, and after failing to re-sign Mike Yastrzemski, could pivot to working out a trade for the Dodgers slugger.
