The Los Angeles Dodgers avoided another serious injury as Teoscar Hernández is hopeful to only miss one or two more games before returning to the lineup.

The 31-year-old suffered what was initially deemed a left foot contusion as a result of being hit by a pitch in the first inning on Friday night.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts voiced concern after the loss despite an X-ray coming back negative.

“Not great,” answered Roberts when asked for an update on Hernández following the Dodgers’ loss to the Cleveland Guardians.

“He’s as tough as they come, and he could barely move his foot. So I don’t see how it’s not going to be an IL, but I’m sure we’re going to give it a couple days to kind of see how he comes out. … He doesn’t come out of games, and just afterward, typically it subsides with the pain. But it didn’t, so it’s concerning.”

Hernández himself feared news that would come from undergoing a CT scan and MRI, but both scans came back negative.

“I thought it was worse, honestly. When I got hit and after a couple hours, I felt like the pain wasn’t going away,” Hernández said.

“So today I was expecting really bad news but thank God it was nothing to worry about and I’m going to be ready in a couple days.”

Hernández plans to test his foot with some running and more drills on Sunday, which will play a key role in determining when he can return to the lineup.

“Just take the day (off) today, do some activities tomorrow to see how it’s going, and maybe Monday or Tuesday be back on the field,” he said.

Hernández regularly has been lauded for not only his production but presence in the Dodgers clubhouse as well.

The Dodgers signed Hernández to a one-year, $23.5 million contract during the offseason. He rejected multi-year deals in order to sign with the Dodgers in pursuit of a World Series.
