Spring Training Recap: James Outman & David Bote Power Dodgers To Win Over Athletics

The Los Angeles Dodgers sent several regulars to Hohokam Stadium to play the Athletics in their first — and only — split-squad day of the spring, and they came away with an 8-4 road win.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, Major League field coordinator Bob Geren, first base coach Chris Woodward and third base coach Dino Ebel also went on the road. Bench coach Danny Lehmann filled the interim manager role at Camelback Ranch.

David Bote provided the Dodgers with an early lead by hitting a two-run home run in the second inning. Bote has continued to impress this spring as he looks to complete an uphill battle in making the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster.

Similarly, Outman’s leadoff single was encouraging as the Dodgers still have question marks at second base and center field. Tommy Edman, who was the presumed center fielder heading into Spring Training, has received almost all of his starts at second base.

Outman, Andy Pages and Hyeseong Kim are seemingly vying for playing time in center field. Outman further bolstered his case with an RBI triple in the sixth inning. Bote then added onto his day with an RBI single that extended the Dodgers’ lead to 4-0.

The Dodgers received more production late on respective RBI base hits from Bubba Alleyne, Ezequiel Pagan and Aaron Bracho in the eighth inning. Alex Freeland helped the Dodgers continue to break the game open with a solo home run in the ninth.

Dodgers pitching

Justin Wrobleski led a strong pitching effort by collecting two strikeouts and retiring all nine batters faced over three innings.

He was followed by Ben Casparius working a scoreless inning, and Anthony Banda picked up two strikeouts as he retired the side in order in the fifth.

Miguel Andujar hit a solo homer off Sam Carlson to prevent the Athletics from being shut out.
