Spring Training Recap: Dodgers Lineup Has Quiet Night In Loss To Rockies

The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a second consecutive loss as they fell 5-1 to the Colorado Rockies in their first visit to Salt River Fields of the year.

Monday’s matchup was the first and only the Dodgers and Rockies have in Cactus League play. They were scheduled to play last week at Camelback Ranch but the game was canceled due to rain.

Back from playing with Team Venezuela in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, David Perlata went 0-for-2 with one walk. Peralta’s only time reaching base came in the seventh inning, and it appeared the Dodgers would cut into their 3-0 deficit.

Chris Taylor also drew a walk and Jason Heyward’s single loaded the bases with nobody out. However, pinch-runner Alex Freeland made a misread on the bases and ran into a double play on a fly ball into foul territory in left field.

Brandon Lewis’ two-out RBI single in the ninth inning drove in the Dodgers’ only run of the game.

Tayler Scott got the start in what essentially was a bullpen game for the Dodgers. He completed a scoreless inning but Caleb Ferguson allowed four consecutive hits after retiring the first batter faced in the second.

That put the Dodgers in a 2-0 deficit and created a regular-season scenario for Evan Phillips as he entered with two outs and runners in scoring position. Phillips struck out Yonathan Daza to end the inning.

Phillips then retired both batters faced in the third before the ball was handed to Alex Vesia, who was not pitching when the Rockies extended their lead in the fourth inning but was responsible for Coco Montes being on base.

Dodgers split-squad

The Dodgers are playing their second set of split-squad games on Tuesday, with Clayton Kershaw facing the Cleveland Guardians at Goodyear, and Noah Syndergaard starting at home against the San Francisco Giants.

SportsNet LA is televising the Dodgers’ home game.
