Rob Manfred Hints At Changes For MLB All-Star Game Uniforms

The 2024 MLB All-Star Game took place at Globe Life Field on Tuesday, which saw the American League earn a 5-3 win over the National League. The AL has now won the Midsummer Classic in 10 of the last 11 years.

This year’s exhibition was the fourth consecutive in which players wore generic AL and NL uniforms. These have been unpopular among fans for both the looks, and as they make it difficult to tell which team a player represents.

Changes could be on the way as MLB commissioner Rob Manfred hinted that players may revert back to wearing their team uniforms for the 2025 All-Star Game, via Tyler Kepner of The Athletic:

“I’m aware of the sentiment on this issue. I think where my head is on it, it’s something we’re going to have a conversation about coming out of the All-Star Game,” Manfred told members of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

“We’ve got a lot of uniform things going on. Obviously the conversations have to involve the players, first and foremost, and Nike and some of our partners, but I am aware of the sentiment and I do know why people kind of like that tradition. There will be conversations about that.”

With the exception of the first All-Star Game in 1933, players wore their everyday uniforms for the Midsummer Classic from 1934 through 2019.

MLB switched to the generic jerseys in 2021, which coincided with Nike and Fanatics becoming the league’s new uniform partners.

MLB introduced All-Star jerseys in 1997, but players initially only wore them for workouts and the Home Run Derby.

MLB making adjustments to uniforms for 2025 season

The All-Star Game jersey isn’t the only uniform-related issue MLB has faced this year. The league has been embroiled in controversy due to sweeping changes made to uniforms that are manufactured by Nike and Fanatics.

Major changes will be made to the MLB jerseys next season, including a return to larger lettering, as well as fixes to the pants that have been deemed as see-through by many players.

Nike is also working on a solution to address the slight color differences between the jerseys and pants of some of the clubs’ gray road uniforms, in addition to the discoloration that can occur due to perspiration in certain instances.

Once the solution is finalized, adjusted gray uniforms will go on field as soon as the second half of this season.
