Recap: Will Smith Delivers Game-Winning Hit For Dodgers In Comeback Vs. Reds

Tyler Glasnow surrendered two home runs in his worst start since returning from the injured list, but the Los Angeles Dodgers found two-out magic for a 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Tommy Edman’s two-run homer in the second inning provided Glasnow with a lead that he upheld until a bumpy fourth inning. For Edman, it was an encouraging sign considering he was not available in the series opener due to aggravating his right ankle.

Glasnow held the Reds without a hit until Gavin Lux’s two-out single in the third inning.

Nothing came of that, but after Glasnow issued his third walk with one out in the fourth, he hung a slider that Jake Fraley hit for a two-run home run to tie the game. Noelvi Marte then punished a hanging slider as well to put the Reds ahead 3-2 before Glasnow could get through the inning.

Bubbling command trouble then boiled over in the fifth as a leadoff double was followed by back-to-back walks that loaded the bases and ended Glasnow’s night. Jack Dreyer allowed one inherited run to score but Ben Casparius entered to finish the inning.

The book closed on Glasnow at four runs allowed, five walks and three strikeouts over four-plus innings.

Nick Lodolo became the latest starter to give the Dodgers lineup fits. Even when accounting for Edman’s early home run, Lodolo had six strikeouts through two innings. Esteury Ruiz’s bunt attempt to lead off the third inning was the first out that did not come by way of a strikeout.

Lodolo finished with a season-high 11 strikeouts over 5.1 innings. He became the third opposing starter to reach double-digits in strikeouts in the Dodgers’ last five games. Lodolo’s total exceeded Garrett Crochet and Chase Burns both collecting 10.

Dodgers rallies

After stranding Teoscar Hernández’s one-out double in the sixth inning, the Dodgers nearly did so with Michael Conforto and Mookie Betts in the seventh as well.

Will Smith’s soft fly ball dropped in left field for a two-out RBI single and Freddie Freeman’s third hit of the game pulled the Dodgers even.

Smith delivered for the Dodgers again in the ninth inning with a go-ahead RBI double. All five of the Dodgers’ runs in the game were scored with two outs.

Shohei Ohtani had a particularly rough night as he went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts. It was Ohtani’s second four-strikeout game of the season.
