The Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks battled it out all game as both teams had a comeback of their own, but ultimately, it was Shohei Ohtani who provided the game-winning runs in a 14-11 victory.
The Dodgers jumped out in the first inning after Shohei Ohtani doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Freddie Freeman. But the Diamondbacks came back in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead as they hit two home runs and scored three against Roki Sasaki.
Kiké Hernández brought the Dodgers within one run with a home run to leadoff the second inning, and after Miguel Rojas singled, Ohtani doubled again to tie it.
The Dodgers took the lead with a five-run third inning. Will Smith walked, Freeman doubled and Andy Pages singled them home. Then Hernández singled, Rojas walked and Outman reached on a fielder’s choice and error that allowed two runs to score.
The Dodgers scored their fifth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Mookie Betts that made it an 8-3 game. It also ended the night for Eduardo Rodriguez, who lasted just 2.2 innings while allowing all eight runs.
Eugenio Suarez doubled to start the fourth for the Diamondbacks, and he scored on a ground out by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. But things fell apart in the fifth inning after Sasaki walked Ketel Marte to leadoff the inning.
After the walk, Sasaki came out of the game, replaced by Anthony Banda. The D-Backs had a single and walk to load the bases, and with two outs, Gurriel Jr. tied the game with a grand slam.
Banda was back out for the sixth inning and gave up a single, intentional walk and another walk to load the bases once again. With two outs, he was replaced by Luis García, who walked in the go-ahead run for Arizona.
Marte then blasted his second homer of the game, this time against Alex Vesia, to extend their lead to 10-8 in the bottom of the eighth. Randal Grichuck also hit one out to make it back-to-back homers for Arizona, giving them their 11th run of the game.
The Dodgers rallied in the ninth with a leadoff single from Freeman, then back-to-back doubles from Pages and Hernández to make it 11-10. Max Muncy tied the game with a single, and Michael Conforto was hit to put two runners on base for Shohei Ohtani.
Ohtani then slugged a three-run homer to give the Dodgers a 14-11 lead and Tanner Scott closed it out in the bottom of the ninth.
Pitching struggles for Dodgers
Sasaki finished his outing going 4+ innings, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Although he was able to get through a few innings unscathed, he once again lacked velcotity, command and swing-and-miss stuff
Banda pitched 1.2 innings, and he was credited with allowing four runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Like Sasaki, Banda also struggled with his command, and his season-long issue of not missing enough bats was apparent in this one.
