Recap: Noah Syndergaard & Dodgers Bullpen Struggle In 2nd Consecutive Loss To Diamondbacks

Noah Syndergaard failed to replicate the success from his Los Angeles Dodgers debut and it resulted in a 12-8 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

After taking the series opener to extend their winning streak to three games, the Dodgers have now dropped consecutive contests at Chase Field and are in danger of losing three of four to start their road trip.

The Dodgers jumped on Zach Davies early, with Max Muncy’s RBI single, J.D. Martinez’s sacrifice fly and James Outman’s two-run home run putting them up 4-0 in the first inning.

However, that was quickly wiped away. The Diamondbacks scored a run on back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first inning and had a two-out rally in the second.

It began with a triple from Alek Thomas, who went 4-for-4 after entering the game hitless on the season. Geraldo Perdomo followed Thomas’ triple with a home run, which then led to a base hit and Ketel Marte putting the Diamondbacks ahead with his long ball.

Syndergaard hitting Corbin Carroll with a pitch spelled trouble in the third inning. Carroll promptly stole second base — his third off Syndergaard this season — and he later scored on Gabriel Moreno’s single.

Syndergaard pitched just four innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. Seven of those had an exit velocity of at least 95 mph. Despite finding success against the Diamondbacks last week by relying on his sinker and slider, the right-hander primarily threw a fastball-changeup combination on Saturday.

Davies nearly let the Dodgers back into the game as he lost complete control in the fourth inning. He retired two batters in a row after J.D. Martinez’s leadoff double but then went through a stretch where 11 of 12 pitches were balls, culminating with Mookie Betts being a third consecutive walk, which brought a run in.

Davies also fell behind 3-1 in the count against Freddie Freeman but had luck on his side as a 105.2 mph line drive was hit right to Thomas in center field. It was a frustrating result for Freeman, who otherwise finished with four hits on the night and had an RBI double in the sixth inning.

Unfortunately for Davies, his night was cut short at 4.1 innings due to a strained left oblique.

The Dodgers scored another run in the eighth when Jason Heyward hit a solo home run off the foul pole, and Will Smith added an RBI single.

Dodgers bullpen can’t keep Diamondbacks at bay

Although the Dodgers offense attempted to mount a comeback, their bullpen woes continued. Alex Vesia gave up one run, Brusdar Graterol allowed two and the Diamondbacks scored three off Andre Jackson.

Saturday was the first time the Dodgers scored at least eight runs but lost since May of the 2022 season.
