Recap: Miguel Vargas Shines In MLB Debut To Lead Dodgers Past Giants

Miguel Vargas had a memorable MLB debut and Julio Urías turned in another strong performance against the San Francisco Giants to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-0 win.

Vargas didn’t quite match the record-setting debut fellow Dodgers prospect James Outman in his debut, but still went 2-for-4 with a game-high two RBI.

Vargas broke up the scoreless tie in the second inning by driving a ground-rule double to the gap in right-center field. The run was set up by Trayce Thompson drawing the first of his two walks on the night and promptly stealing second base.

Then in the fourth inning with runners at the corners, Vargas was credited with an RBI infield single when Max Muncy slid under the tag at home plate on a grounder hit to third base.

Mookie Betts provided some insurance for the Dodgers with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Wednesday represented the first time this season that Betts, Turner and Freddie Freeman each were held without a hit. That resulted in Turner’s hitting streak being snapped at 20 games.

Up to that point Urías had largely breezed through six scoreless innings. But trouble began to set in when J.D. Davis’ led off the seventh inning with a single, which was the Giants’ first hit off Urías that didn’t come after two outs.

That was followed by a broken-bat infield single because Gavin Lux couldn’t cleanly get a throw off, and a hard-hit grounder that got by Turner to load the bases and chase Urías from the game.

Evan Phillips faced a bases loaded situation with nobody out for the second consecutive night, and he again completed a scoreless inning. Phillips was aided by the Giants running into a double play.

Th Giants loaded the bases with one out in the ninth before Craig Kimbrel managed to wiggle out of trouble to convert his 19th save of the season.

Dodgers winning streak vs. Giants

The Dodgers have won seven games in a row against the Giants, which is their longest stretch in head-to-head meetings since eight consecutive victories from Aug. 19, 2006 to April 8, 2007.

Moreover, the Dodgers now are in position to complete a sweep at Oracle Park after entering the series with the home team having won each of previous nine games this season.
