Recap: Max Muncy’s Grand Slam Helps Dodgers Extend Reign Over Rockies

Yoshinobu Yamamoto turned in his best start of the month and Max Muncy put together another big performance to help the Los Angeles Dodgers ultimately cruise to an 8-1 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Yamamoto pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just one run. His outing was cut short due to the rain delay that began in the top of the sixth inning.

Yamamoto retired the first eight batters faced before allowing a single to Sam Hilliard with two outs in the third inning. The Rockies didn’t have a second baserunner until Thairo Estrada walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth, only for Michael Toglia to follow that by hitting into a double play.

Rockies rookie Chase Dollander largely matched Yamamoto’s brilliance until his defense let him down in the sixth inning. Though, some of the trouble was self-inflicted as Dollander walked Dalton Rushing to start the frame.

Shohei Ohtani’s base hit put two runners on, but Dollander nearly escaped the trouble as he retired Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman.

Umpires allowed the game to continue despite a strong rainstorm making conditions untenable, and Max Muncy’s pop-up to first base wound up falling for a two-run single as neither Toglia nor Estrada could locate the ball.

Interim Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer and several players shouted at the umpiring crew as they suspended play and walked off the field at that point.

The Dodgers scored a third run in the sixth once play resumed one hour and 27 minutes later.

Colorado got on the board in the bottom half of the inning but had their rally shut off when Alex Vesia took over for Lou Trivino.

Muncy then gave the Dodgers a comfortable cushion with his second grand slam in the last three games. The grand slam was Muncy’s eighth of his career, and his six since 2023 are the most in baseball.

Michael Conforto’s potential resurgence continued in the eighth inning with his second home run in as many nights.

The Dodgers have now won nine games in a row against the Rockies and are looking to complete a series sweep with Clayton Kershaw taking the mound in the afternoon matchup on Thursday.

Dodgers run support for Yoshinobu Yamamoto

With their fortunate scoring in the top of the sixth, the Dodgers snapped a streak of scoring zero or one run while Yamamoto was still in the game.

Overall, that’s occurred 10 times in Yamamoto’s 15 starts this season, and it had been the case through each of his first four outings in June.
