Recap: Dodgers Hit Back-To-Back Home Runs To Topple Pirates

The Los Angeles Dodgers continued to hit for power and Bobby Miller provided some length in a 6-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Dodgers now are in position to win the four-game set that concludes Thursday.

Miller’s night began on a rocky note as he surrendered a solo home run to Bryan Reynolds in the first inning. The Dodgers’ deficit remained 1-0 until Jack Suwinski connected on a three-run homer in the fourth inning.

Miller retired six of seven batters faced in between surrendering the two long balls. He also retired eight batters in a row after Suwinski’s home run, with the streak ending on a two-out walk in the sixth inning. That marked the end of Miller’s night, and he voiced some displeasure with home-plate umpire’s Clint Vondrak’s call while walking off the field.

Although Miller had some frustration at the end of his outing, he snapped a streak of four consecutive games the Dodgers received four innings or fewer from their starter.

Miller exited with a lead thanks to the Dodgers scoring in the fourth and fifth innings. Jason Heyward’s sacrifice fly with the bases loaded got them on the board, and later Miguel Rojas contributed a two-out RBI single.

J.D. Martinez then connected on a big swing for a three-run home run that put the Dodgers ahead. David Peralta followed that with a solo shot to provide some insurance and give the Dodgers their eighth set of back-to-back home runs this season.

Dodgers bullpen responds

After getting the final out of the sixth inning, Phil Bickford struggled in the seventh. He gave way to Ryan Brasier with the bases loaded and nobody out, but the Pirates were turned away. Brasier did benefit from Miguel Rojas making a leaping grab on a line drive for the first out.

Caleb Ferguson then got through the eighth inning without issue on what was his third consecutive day pitching, and Daniel Hudson converted the save opportunity. The appearance was Hudson’s third since being activated off the 60-day injured list and his first save in 13 months.

Before Hudson could close the game out he allowed the Pirates to load the bases on a double and consecutive walks.
