Recap: Freddie Freeman & Michael Conforto Back Dustin May’s Bid For Perfect Game In Dodgers’ Sweep Of White Sox

Freddie Freeman built on his walk-off hit from Wednesday night and Dustin May flirted with a perfect game to help the Los Angeles Dodgers complete a sweep of the Chicago White Sox.

Freeman provided the Dodgers with a 1-0 lead by pulling a double into right field that scored Shohei Ohtani from first base. The double was Freeman’s 530th of his career and gave him back-to-back games with an RBI for the first time since May 30-31.

Freeman collected another RBI double as part of a four-run third inning that saw Michael Conforto hit a home run. Freeman nearly had a homer himself in the fifth inning but was robbed by Mike Tauchman making a leaping catch at the short wall in right field.

May nonetheless continued to dominant and easily uphold a 5-0 lead. He was efficient throughout the start and received some defensive help from Conforto and Friedman.

Conforto was first to save May’s bid for a perfect game when he made a sliding catch to take a hit away from Miguel Vargas in the fifth inning. Freeman then did his part on a diving catch to start the sixth.

Unfortunately, it was all for naught as Brooks Baldwin follow Freeman’s web gem with a single into right field. Tauchman added a second hit in the inning for the White Sox, but May stranded both runners.

May wound up tying a career high with seven innings pitched. He allowed just four hits and held the White Sox scoreless until surrendering a two-run homer in the eighth. That ended May’s night on a sour note but it otherwise was a terrific bounce-back outing in the Dodgers’ 6-2 win.

Mookie Betts contributed to the offensive breakout with a solo home run in the seventh inning. The homer was Betts’ first since June 8.

Dodgers’ plan at third base

Miguel Rojas started at third base in place of Max Muncy, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left knee bone bruise. Muncy estimates he will miss around six weeks with the knee injury.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated the plan is to primarily rely on Rojas and Kiké Hernández to fill in at third base, but noted Tommy Edman would begin fielding grounders at the position to be an option as well.
