Recap: Dodgers’ Winning Streak Snapped With Loss To Mets

The Los Angeles Dodgers had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 5-2 loss to the New York Mets and now face a series rubber match on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.

One night removed needing to use seven relief pitchers, the Dodgers received some length from Tony Gonsolin in his third start of the season. Gonsolin was provided with a 2-0 lead in the second inning but immediately allowed the Mets to start their comeback effort.

After retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the second, Gonsolin hit Jared Young with a pitch. Young deftly stuck his right elbow out to ensure the ball hit him, and it wound up sparking a rally.

Tyrone Taylor kept the inning alive with a base hit and Brett Baty followed with an RBI single that cut the Dodgers’ lead in half.

Gonsolin induced a double play to escape trouble in the third inning, but then worked himself into a jam in the fourth, again with two outs. Back-to-back four-pitch walks loaded the bases, and a chopper that went over Gonsolin’s head resulted in a game-tying infield single.

Juan Soto’s two-run double gave the Mets their decided lead despite Starling Marte being thrown out at home plate. The extra-base hit was Soto’s first since hitting a home run on May 9.

The Dodgers had multiple opportunities to score after the second inning but hit into three double plays. Two were by Kiké Hernández, who earlier in the game provided an RBI single.

Mets starter David Peterson tied a career high with 7.2 innings pitched. He struck out Shohei Ohtani three times in four at-bats. Edwin Díaz completed a four-out save while pitching on the second night of a back-to-back.

Ohtani, Betts, Teoscar Hernández and Freddie Freeman went a combined 2-for-16 with seven strikeouts in the loss.

Dodgers bullpen gets break

Anthony Banda pitched the sixth inning and then gave way to Bobby Miller for his first career relief appearance at the Major League level. Miller completed two innings to help preserve the Dodgers’ bullpen.

Miller was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday with Matt Sauer getting optioned.
