Recap: Dodgers Shut Down By Max Scherzer, Lose To Mets In Extra Innings

Bobby Miller initially added onto the strong showing by Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitchers, but he exited with a deficit and the New York Mets went on for a 2-1 walk-off win in the 10th inning.

The loss snapped the Dodgers’ winning streak at a season-high-tying six games and prevented them from completing a sweep at Citi Field.

Miller was efficient as he matched scoreless innings with Max Scherzer before stumbling in the fifth. Starling Marte hit a leadoff single and stole second base when Brett Baty struck out. Mark Canha was then hit by a pitch and Miller walked Omar Narvaez to load the bases.

He induced a soft comebacker but couldn’t cleanly field the high chopper, resulting in just one out being made at first base. Marte scored to break up the scoreless tie and wound up being the only run charged to Miller.

Brusdar Graterol needed all of one pitch to strand two runners in scoring position.

The 4.2 innings pitched marked Miller’s second-shortest start of his young career, but it was his first time allowing one run or fewer since June 10.

Miller’s outing was bested by Scherzer, who turned in seven scoreless innings. The outing was Scherzer’s first time facing the Dodgers since he was ejected at Dodger Stadium after failing a sticky check.

Scherzer allowed just one hit and finished with six strikeouts. The Dodgers’ lone hit was Jason Heyward’s check-swing single that beat the shift with two outs in the second inning. Heyward was thrown out attempting to stretch it to a double.

The Dodgers’ best opportunity against Scherzer came in the fourth inning when Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman worked back-to-back walks. But Scherzer wiggled his way out of trouble by retiring the next three batters faced.

Dodgers rally against Mets bullpen

The Dodgers broke through in the eighth inning, sparked by James Outman’s leadoff walk. It eventually led to Betts’ game-tying RBI single.

The game remained tied until Luis Guillorme delivered walk-off RBI double in the 10th inning.
