The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees met for the first time since the 2024 World Series, and the game proved to live up to the hype coming into the series.

The game started out with Aaron Judge, the reigning 2024 American League MVP and favorite in 2025, blasting a home run to put the Yankees up 1-0 in the first inning against Tony Gonsolin. But Shohei Ohtani, the reigning 2024 National League MVP and favorite in 2025, tying the game with a solo home run of his own against Max Fried.

The Dodgers also added another run in the second inning when Tommy Edman doubled, advanced on a balk and scored on a ground out.

But the Yankees took control of the game early. In the top of the second inning, Austin Wells hit a solo home run, and Trent Grisham slugged a two-run homer to put the Yankees up 4-1. And in the third inning, Paul Goldschmidt left the yard to give the Yankees a 5-2 lead.

Four home runs are second-most Gonsolin has given up in a game, just one behind the five he allowed against the Marlins in his final start before Tommy John surgery in 2023.

Despite it looking like the Dodgers were out of the game, Gonsolin settled in and tossed three perfect innings from the fourth to sixth. He finished his outing going six innings, allowing five runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

That also allowed the Dodgers to get back in the game as they rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth, starting with another home run from Shohei Ohtani, his 22nd of the season that made it. a 5-3 game.

Teoscar Hernández and Will Smith both followed with singles before Freddie Freeman continued to torment the Yankees by doubling home a run. Andy Pages tied the game with a single and Michael Conforto worked a walk to give the Dodgers a 6-5 lead.

The Dodgers had a chance to continue adding on with the bases loaded and just one out, but Miguel Rojas grounded into a double play with Ohtani on deck to end the inning.

Fried, who has been one of the top pitchers in MLB this year, finished his outing going five innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

In the seventh, the Dodgers added on some insurance as Smith started the rally with a two-out single. Freeman followed with a double, and both of them scored when Pages singled to give the Dodgers eight runs for the game.

Dodgers bullpen shuts down Yankees

Following Gonsolin, the Dodgers bullpen combined to shut down the Yankees and clinch the win. Jack Dreyer tossed 0.2 innings, Ben Casparius worked one, Tanner Scott recorded an out with the tying run at the plate, and Alex Vesia recorded the save.
