Recap: Dodgers All-Around Effort Prevents Rockies’ Sweep

The Los Angeles Dodgers received a collective effort to get an 8-4 win to salvage their series against the Colorado Rockies. The Dodgers finished 6-3 on their road trip and haven’t been swept at Coors Field since September 2015.

Playing amid an ongoing saga related to his first return to Atlanta and potential change in representation from Casey Close at Excel Sports Management, Freddie Freeman continued to swing a hot bat as the reigning National League Player of the Week.

Freeman sparked the Dodgers early with a solo home run in the first inning and went on to finish 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk.

Will Smith and Cody Bellinger each hit a solo home run as well, and Trea Turner bounced back from consecutive hitless games by tying for the team lead with two RBI. The bottom of the Dodgers lineup was key in providing offense, as Jake Lamb went 1-for-2 with a walk in his first start, Gavin Lux collected two hits, and Eddy Alvarez had two RBI.

Julio Urías turned in the best performance of any Dodgers starter in the series, going 5.1 innings and collecting five strikeouts while allowing three runs. He kept Colorado off the board until Brendan Rodgers’ two-out RBI double in the fourth inning.

Urías allowed another run when C.J. Cron hit an RBI single in the sixth, and he was charged for the third when Brusdar Graterol gave up a base hit upon entering the game with men at the corners and one out. Rodgers later hit a solo home run off Reyes Moronta.

Rockies made MLB history against Dodgers

By getting the better of Tyler Anderson and Clayton Kershaw, the Rockies made MLB history by becoming the first team to tab a pitcher who was 8-0 or better with a loss, and defeat a multiple Cy Young Award winner in back-to-back games (either order).
