Recap: Dodgers Hit 5 Home Runs, Complete Sweep Of Mets

The Los Angeles Dodgers hit three early home runs off Carlos Carrasco and that proved key because their defense was sloppy behind Max Scherzer in a 14-4 win that completed a series sweep of the New York Mets.

Justin Turner announced his return to the lineup with a two-run homer in the first inning. Two batters later, Will Smith slugged his third home run in as many games. Trea Turner’s RBI double extended the Dodgers’ lead to 4-0 in the second inning, and Max Muncy went to left-center field for a two-run homer.

The Dodgers largely went quiet from there until Scherzer’s sacrifice fly and Muncy slugging a second two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Scherzer stranded a pair of runners in the first and second inning, but couldn’t do so again in the third. A leadoff walk and double put two on with nobody out, and a grounder to the right side of the infield got the Mets on the board.

The Mets then loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning, but only managed one run once again. That RBI groundout marked the start of Scherzer retiring eight in a row as he got through six innings on 94 pitches.

He exited with a 9-2 lead but the Dodgers bullpen allowed the game to get interesting. Darien Núñez, fresh off the injured list, retired just one of four batters faced. Edwin Uceta inherited a bases-loaded jam and immediately allowed a run to score on a wild pitch.

J.D. Davis then nearly pulled the Mets back into the game but his drive to center field was caught at the edge of the warning track for a sacrifice fly.

The Dodgers responded with three runs in the eighth inning behind Smith driving in two on a base hit and Chris Taylor collecting his first hit with an RBI double.

Uceta remained on the mound for the eighth inning and Conner Greene pitched the ninth to wrap up the win.

Turner sparks Dodgers

While Turner, Muncy and Smith provided plenty of power by combining for four home runs, Trea Turner set the table from the leadoff spot by going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and a walk.
