The Los Angeles Dodgers ended their five-game losing streak with a late rally against the New York Mets, winning 5-2 in extra innings.
When the game went to extras, Mookie Betts put the Dodgers up quickly with an RBI single, giving them a 3-2 lead. Freddie Freeman then extended that lead with a two-run homer.
But getting to that point proved to be a struggle.
The Dodgers had few chances to score early in the game with just three hits and one walk through the first seven innings against Tylor Megill. They did get two runners into scoring position, but went 0-for-4 in those opportunities.
Their first chance came in the second inning when Teoscar Hernández hit a leadoff double. The ball made it over the fence, but Mets centerfielder Tyrone Taylor reached over to keep it in play, taking away a home run.
After Hernández, Gavin Lux lined out, Chris Taylor struck out and Jason Heyward grounded out to end the inning.
Betts singled with one out in the third and advanced to second on a ground out from Shohei Ohtani, but Freeman flied out to end the inning.
Megill finished his day throwing seven shutout innings.
Tyler Glasnow turned in another fantastic outing as well. Glasnow pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.
One of those walks came back to bite him in the third inning as Francisco Lindor followed with a home run to put the Mets up 2-0.
The Dodgers finally got on the board in the eighth when the Mets went to the bullpen, but even that was a struggle as it required a Mets’ error and Shohei Ohtani beating out a double play.
With two runners on, Freeman singled home their first run of the game, but Will Smith struck out to end the rally with two runners on.
The Dodgers did, however, rally to tie the game in the ninth. Hernández started the inning with a single, and Lux followed with one of his own to put runners at the corners.
Chris Taylor then bunted for a single, allowing the tying run to score, but they were unable to capitalize from there.
Daniel Hudson took over in the bottom of the ninth and allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases, but he was able to escape the jam, earning himself the win. Blake Treinen earned the save in extra innings.
Dodgers and Mets playing Game 2 of doubleheader
Game 2 of the doubleheader begins 30 minutes after the end of the first game. Gavin Stone is set to start for the Dodgers against José Quintana, who is starting for the Mets.
Stone was originally scheduled to start Monday, but the Dodgers pushed him back to the later game, while the Mets flipped their starters with Megill starting the afternoon game and Quintana going at night.
