Players Who Accepted & Rejected Qualifying Offer For 2023 Season

Fourteen players were extended the $19.65 million qualifying offer for the 2023 season, and Tuesday was the deadline to accept or decline the one-year contract. Los Angeles Dodgers free agents Tyler Anderson and Trea Turner were among the 12 players who rejected it.

The rest of the group consisted of Chris Bassitt, Xander Bogaerts, Willson Contreras, Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, Aaron Judge, Brandon Nimmo, Anthony Rizzo, Carlos Rodón and Dansby Swanson.

The only players who accepted the $19.65 million qualifying offer were Joc Pederson and Martín Perez. They will now return to the San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers, respectively, for the 2023 season.

Shortly after declining the qualifying offer, Anderson reportedly reached agreement with the Los Angeles Angels on a three-year contract. As a result, the Dodgers will receive a compensation pick after the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft.

Rizzo also quickly re-signed with the New York Yankees on a two-year deal that includes a club option for the 2025 season after rejecting the qualifying offer.

The qualifying offer system has been in place since 2012, and heading into the offseason, only 11 of the 110 players extended one accepted it. Brett Anderson did so with the Dodgers in 2016, and Hyun-Jin Ryu in 2019.

A player must have spent the entire season with one team in order to be eligible for a qualifying offer. Furthermore, a player can only be extended the qualifying offer once in his career.

If a player rejects it and goes on to sign a contract with a new team, the club losing the free agent receives compensation. What specifically that is depends on the value of the contract and if the team(s) involved exceeded the luxury tax threshold, received revenue sharing, or none of those two.

Trea Turner unlikely to re-sign with Dodgers

Although there is said to be mutual interest between Turner and the Dodgers, re-signing in L.A. is not considered a likely outcome. The speedy shortstop has been drawing interest from the Philadelphia Phillies, Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants, among other teams.
