Dodgers News: Mookie Betts Has Peace Of Mind At Shortstop

Mookie Betts is entering his second season as the shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers, but it is first with a full offseason of preparation to get acclimated with the unique demands of the position.

Betts filled in as the Dodgers’ shortstop last season before an injury and the addition of Tommy Edman allowed the Dodgers to move him back to right field. Betts was serviceable when playing shortstop in 2024, but it was clear he was learning on the fly.

There is still worry about how sustainable the plan is long-term, but Betts looked much improved during Cactus League play this spring thanks to all the work he put in during the offseason.

Instead of constantly feeling like a student cramming for a midterm the next day, Betts’ preparation has him feeling confident in his ability to make all of the different plays required of a MLB shortstop.

“I can go home and sleep,” Betts said. “I can go home and not have to stare at video all day, trying to figure things out. Like I said, I truly believe in my work and I’m giving it my all so I can lay my head down at night, knowing my work prepared me for any ball hit to me.”

That confidence translated to a very productive Spring Training defensively. In 51 Cactus League innings, Betts finished with an unblemished fielding percentage, nine putouts and 19 assists. More importantly, he looked much more comfortable making irregular plays and throwing from different angles.

Betts could make a strong case for himself as a leading MVP candidate this season if he is able to pair his prowess at the plate with a good defensive showing at a premium position.

Mookie Betts foundation donates to wildfire relief efforts

Betts is the latest member of the Dodgers’ organization to do his part in helping the victims of the wildfires, donating $30,000 worth of shoes and apparel through his 50/50 Foundation.

The mission of Betts’ foundation is focused on helping children excel in their pursuits by putting them in the best possible position to do so, both in and outside of sports.
