MLB Trade Rumors: Giancarlo Stanton Prioritizing Winning, Playing On West Coast

While there was some belief the ongoing saga between the Miami Marlins and Giancarlo Stanton would reach a resolution by the start of the annual MLB Winter Meetings, it’s difficult to envision a scenario where that holds true.

Stanton’s talent make him a desirable commodity, but actually trading the 2017 National League MVP is at-best a difficult proposition. Stanton has 10 years and $295 million remaining on his contract, plus a full no-trade clause.

At present time it’s not believed he would approve a trade to either the Boston Red Sox or St. Louis Cardinals. His stance on the San Francisco Giants is unclear, but they’ve been pegged as the most aggressive team.

As the sweepstakes carry on, Stanton has reportedly prioritized joining a contender and returning to the West Coast, per Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball:

Stanton hasn’t stated his preferences publicly, but people with some knowledge of the situation suggest now that he most prefers to 1) win, and 2) be on the West Coast.

The team that most obviously meets that criteria is the Los Angeles Dodgers. They were previously identified as Stanton’s preference, and said to have held trade talks with the Marlins. The latest indication was the Dodgers are being coy and measured with their pursuit.

While the Dodgers have the prospects and financial prowess to trade for Stanton, they’re continuing to work toward getting under the luxury tax threshold. There’s also the factor of Clayton Kershaw potentially opting out of his contract after next season, and the mega 2018 free agent class.

Los Angeles presumably would be more inclined for to trade for Stanton if the Marlins were to assume a substantial portion of his remaining salary.
