Milwaukee Brewers Hire Pat Murphy As New Manager Over Clayton McCullough & Other Candidates

The Milwaukee Brewers named Pat Murphy as their new manager to replace Craig Counsell, making him their 20th skipper in franchise history. Murphy was chosen over several other candidates, including Los Angeles Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough.

Murphy had served as the Brewers bench coach since the 2016 season. Prior to that, he had a brief stint as San Diego Padres interim manager in 2015.

Murphy began his coaching career with the Maryville College Fighting Scots in 1983. He would later become the head baseball coach for Notre Dame and Arizona State, and more recently managed two of the Padres’ Minor League affiliates.

“Pat Murphy brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and passion for the game of baseball as well as a familiarity with the Brewers organization, players, staff and culture,” Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said in a statement.

“Pat has been a significant contributor in the run of recent seasons of unprecedented success in franchise history. We are pleased to have Pat remain in the Brewers family and excited to name him manager today.”

For McCullough, it marks yet another instance in which he interviewed for a managerial position and did not get the job. He was also under consideration for the Cleveland Guardians’ managerial vacancy before it went to Stephen Vogt despite McCullough drawing praise for his interview.

Clayton McCullough coaching experience

McCullough just completed his third season as the Dodgers first base coach and ninth overall with the organization. In 2020, he served as a Minor League field coordinator and helped oversee the Dodgers’ operations at the alternate site on the USC campus during the pandemic-shortened season.

Before joining the Dodgers organization in 2015, McCullough worked for the Toronto Blue Jays from 2006-2014, serving as manager of the GCL Blue Jays (2007), Class-A Lansing Lugnuts (2008-2009), Advanced-A Dunedin Blue Jays (2010-2011) and Class-A Vancouver Canadians (2012-2013).
