The 2021 MLB All-Star Game starters were announced and the revealings were not favorable for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Although Max Muncy, Gavin Lux, Justin Turner, Mookie Betts and Chris Taylor all were finalists in Phase 2 of voting, none was selected as a starter for the Midsummer Classic.

This marks the first time since 2017 the Dodgers won’t have a starter in the annual exhibition event. “I just think the team that’s the best team in baseball, let alone the National League, doesn’t have a starter, so I don’t know,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

“I know our guys probably won’t admit it but might be disappointed because it is an honor and thrill to be voted in by the fans to start in an All-Star Game. But it is what it is.”

Reigning National League MVP Freddie Freeman will start at first base, beating out Muncy by a 14% margin. Pittsburgh Pirates breakout player Adam Frazier gets the start at second base, easily beating out Ozzie Albies of the Atlanta Braves in addition to Lux.

Perennial Gold Glove-winner Nolan Arenado won the starting job at third base, edging out Turner by a 6% margin.

Betts and Taylor finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively, among NL outfielders. Braves left fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and Cincinnati Reds outfielders Nick Castellanos and Jesse Winker secured the top three spots.

Though no Dodgers will start in the All-Star Game, they are not eliminated from likely being represented. Reserves will now be selected through a combination of player ballots and choices made by the MLB commissioner’s office.

Reserves and pitchers will be announced live on ESPN on Sunday, July 4.

The 2021 MLB All-Star Game will be played July 13 at Coors Field for the second time ever. Fox will air the event, with first pitch slated for 4:05 p.m. PT.
