Joe Kelly arrived at Dodger Stadium on Saturday morning, with little sleep the night prior and due to be added to the Los Angeles Dodgers active roster in his return after a trade with the Chicago White Sox.

But before Kelly would come up with a key strikeout in the Dodgers’ 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds, he needed to eat. And the right-hander had his sights set on In-N-out.

Kelly’s trip to the Southern California staple wound up leading to a surprise for Dodgers clubhouse attendants.

“I didn’t have breakfast,” Kelly said. “Had an early flight, running off of four hours of sleep. Didn’t want the breakfast on the plane, obviously, so landed, got here and asked Alex (Torres, home clubhouse manager) if I could borrow his car because I was going to go to In-N-Out.

“I asked him what I should get, and he said a bunch of burgers. So I brought back a ton of burgers. The team is going to be mad, but they weren’t here. So obviously I brought it back for the clubhouse staff.”

Kelly has regularly expressed his affinity for In-N-Out, which has been documented on his wife’s, Ashley’s, Instagram accounts at various points.

When Kelly has participated in the annual Justin Turner Golf Classic at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, it’s been with an In-N-Out head cover for his driver.

Joe Kelly appreciated reaction from Dodgers fans

When Kelly entered in the sixth inning, he was greeted to a standing ovation. Kelly received more cheers upon stranding the bases loaded to keep the game tied.

“Obviously it’s fun to be back with so many guys that I’ve played with,” he said. “The crowd was awesome. It definitely helped with the four hours of sleep I got.

“I was a little bit groggy, but when it comes time to pitch, it’s always an adrenaline rush.”
