Jackie Robinson Day Recap: Dodgers Defeat Reds To Extend Winning Streak To 4 Games

The Los Angeles Dodgers began Jackie Robinson Day by gathering around his statue in the center field plaza of Dodger Stadium, and ended the night with a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Tony Gonsolin was hardly dominant or efficient, but he worked out of multiple jams to get through four scoreless innings. The Reds put the leadoff man on base in each of the first three innings and had a two-out double in the fourth.

Gonsolin’s biggest brush with trouble came when Cincinnati loaded the bases in the third inning. Gonsolin escaped unscathed by striking out Aristides Aquino, who hit a two-run home run off Walker Buehler in the series opener.

Gonsolin allowed three hits and issued three walks before giving way to Tyler Anderson. He exited with the Dodgers holding a 2-0 lead.

Consistent production continued to evade the Dodgers but they managed to come up with timely hits. Max Muncy’s leadoff double in the second inning and Justin Turner’s walk were on the verge of being squandered when Chris Taylor delivered a two-out RBI single.

Turner was thrown out at the plate on his attempt to score as well.

Gavin Lux began what turned into a big night with a leadoff single in the third inning and he quickly stole second base. A groundout advanced Lux, and Trea Turner’s two-out RBI triple brought him in. Turner advanced his hitting streak to 26 games with the extra-base hit.

Lux later set the table for the Dodgers by leading off the fifth inning with a triple of his own. They went on to load the bases with nobody out, though only managed to score one run when Justin Turner drew a four-pitch walk.

Anderson provides length out of Dodgers bullpen

Like in his 2022 regular season debut, Tyler Anderson again pitched four innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one run.

He had a minor dust-up with Joey Votto, who took exception to a pitch getting away and hitting him in the head. Some players from the Reds’ bench came onto the field but tempers quickly cooled and play resumed.

Anderson only threw 55 pitches during his relief appearance, and took to the bullpen for more work after being removed as he continues to stretch out.

Craig Kimbrel entered in the ninth inning to convert his first save at Dodger Stadium since being traded to the Dodgers.
