The San Francisco Giants on Friday placed Madison Bumgarner on the 10-day disabled list, which among other things, means he will not start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday in the second of a four-game series at AT&T Park. Bumgarner was slated to be opposed by Clayton Kershaw.

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, Bumgarner sustained bruised ribs and a Grade 1 or 2 strain of the AC joint in his throwing shoulder. Some project him to miss six to eight weeks.

Bumgarner this season is 0-3 with a 3.00 ERA, 2.36 FIP and 1.07 WHIP. In 27 career games (26 starts) against the Dodgers, he’s 14-9 with a 2.70 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. Along with missing him on the mound, the Dodgers won’t have to pitch to Bumgarner, who is 2-for-7 this season with two home runs and two RBI.

With Bumgarner no longer on the docket, the Dodgers are currently slated to face just two left-handers on their seven-game road trip, which begins Friday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Entering play Friday, Los Angeles ranks 20th in batting average (.218), 14th in on-base percentage (.308), 18th in slugging (.350) and wOBA (.292), and 19th in wRC+ (92) this season. Last year, they were worst in the Majors against left-handers in each of the aforementioned categories.

While the Dodgers have still endured their struggles this season, going 3-6 thus far in games against a left-handed starter, Yasmani Grandal welcomes the challenge and believes the team will be better in the long run, having faced so many southpaws.
