Giants Hit 2 Home Runs Off Caleb Ferguson, Avoid Being Swept By Dodgers

Caleb Ferguson didn’t allow an obscene number of hits but two of them were two-run home runs, resulting in a 4-1 win for the San Francisco Giants in the series finale at Dodger Stadium. The loss snapped the Dodgers’ season-best five-game winning streak.

Nick Hundley’s two-run shot in the first inning gave San Francisco an early lead, Brandon Belt’s home run in the third extended it. Ferguson did manage to end his outing on a positive note by retiring the final eight batters faced.

Since recording just five outs in his MLB debut, the young left-hander has improved in each outing. Ferguson went four innings against the Texas Rangers on June 12.

Even if Ferguson had only allowed one home run on Sunday, it would’ve been enough for the Giants to defeat the Dodgers. Chris Stratton led a strong performance by the Giants pitching staff that only surrendered four hits.

A Max Muncy walk and Justin Turner base hit put two on with one out in the first inning. Stratton’s wild pitch and Hundley’s poor throw to second base went into center field, allowing Muncy to score the Dodgers’ only run in the game.

Stratton worked around Ferguson’s leadoff single in the third inning and induced Yasiel Puig into a double play in the fourth. Stratton retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings.

Mark Melancon was the only of four Giants relievers used who allowed a hit — a leadoff single to Kiké Hernandez in the eight inning.
