Gavin Lux: ‘Pretty Surreal’ Playing First Game Against Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers made several trades during the offseason, including one that sent Gavin Lux to the Cincinnati Reds for prospect Mike Sirota and a competitive balance pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.

Lux had been part of the Dodgers organization since 2016, when he was selected with the 20th overall pick in that year’s MLB Draft. He established himself as a top prospect and eventually went on to assume a regular role at the Major League level.

Lux’s final at-bat with the Dodgers was a game-tying sacrifice fly that also advanced a second runner who later scored the game-winning run on Mookie Betts’ fly ball in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series.

Lux faced the Dodgers for the first time on Monday in a Cactus League game and was happy to see many of his former teammates, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:

“It’s pretty surreal, going and seeing all the guys you won a World Series with on the other side. But it’s pretty cool at the same time,” he said after the game.

“I saw Munc (Max Muncy), Teo (Hernandez). (Alex) Vesia gave me a wink after he got me to fly out,” Lux said. “Good relationships. A lot of love for everyone that is still over there. That stuff doesn’t change. You build bonds over years. You never lose those connections with people.”

Lux went 0-for-2 with a walk in the Reds’ 8-1 win over the Dodgers. He started at third base, which is a position he has played a lot this spring due to the Reds’ infield logjam.

The Dodgers made the decision to trade Lux after signing Hyeseong Kim to a three-year contract, who is expected to receive the majority of his opportunities at second base this season.

Gavin Lux grateful for Dodgers

At the time of being traded, Lux expressed his gratitude to the Dodgers for helping him realize his dream of playing in the Majors.

“Thank you to the entire Dodgers organization for taking a chance on an 18 year old kid from Kenosha, Wisconsin and letting him live out his dream of playing in the big leagues and winning a World Series…,” Lux wrote in the Instagram caption.

“To the entire front office, the staff, and most importantly my teammates I had a chance to play with the last 9 years, I will cherish our time forever! And thank you to the fans for all the support through the ups and downs, and supporting me throughout my rehab process, it helped me more than you’ll ever know!

“That being said I’m excited for the marathon to continue with the @reds and being apart of a talented group, LFG!”
