Freeway Series Recap: Shohei Ohtani Hits Pinch-Hit Homer To Power Angels To Victory Over Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim split the first two games of the Angel Stadium portion of the Freeway Series, so Sunday evening’s game represented the rubber match.

With the game tied at three in the seventh inning, Shohei Ohtani hit a pinch-hit home run off Dodgers reliever J.T. Chargois to give the Angels a 4-3 victory to win the series.

As was the case in each of the first two game, the Dodgers got the scoring started on a three-run home run off the bat of Yasiel Puig in the top of the second inning. That scored Matt Kemp and Logan Forsythe, who both walked against Angels starter Andrew Heaney earlier in the inning.

The Angels answered back in the bottom of the third inning against Dodgers starter Alex Wood though. With two outs and the bases loaded, Justin Upton hit a two-RBI single to cut the Dodgers lead to 3-2.

Puig was not able to stick around for the entire game as he left in the fifth inning in the middle of his at-bat and was later diagnosed with a right intercostal oblique strain, so the Dodgers were forced to finish the game without one of their hottest hitters.

The Angels wound up tying the game in the sixth inning on a solo home run off the bat of Albert Pujols. Wood’s day was done after six innings, giving up five hits and three runs while striking out four and walking two.

After Chargois gave up the home run to Ohtani, Dylan Floro made his Dodgers debut and got a double play ball to get out of the seventh inning. He then pitched a scoreless eighth to keep the deficit at 4-3.

The Dodgers offense was not able to rally in the ninth against Justin Anderson though, resulting in the loss.
