Freeway Series Recap: Dodgers Manufacture Extra-Innings Win Over Angels

Mookie Betts and Max Muncy carried the offense as the Los Angeles Dodgers extended their winning streak to four games for the first time this season by defeating the L.A. Angels, 6-5, in 10 innings. The win also cemented the Dodgers would not lose their first series of the season.

Keeping with his hot bat throughout the week, Betts delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded in the second inning, and a game-tying homer in the seventh. In between that, Muncy went the other way for a two-run single in the third.

Muncy then gave the Dodgers a decided lead in the 10th inning. Chris Taylor was the designated man on second base and he quickly stole third. Taylor then jogged home on Muncy’s sacrifice fly to the wall in right field.

Walker Buehler labored through another start and was hurt early by an error from the usually sure-handed Kiké Hernandez. Mike Trout followed it with a two-run home run to give the Angels a lead in the first inning.

Buehler then ran into more trouble in the third as Tommy La Stella doubled and Trout kept the inning alive with a walk. Anthony Rendon cut the Dodgers’ lead in half by golfing an RBI ground-rule double into left field.

The fortuitous bounce into the stands went in Buehler’s favor as he retired Shohei Ohtani to strand runners at second and third base. With the Dodgers still clinging to their lead, Buehler allowed back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners with nobody out.

David Fletcher moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, and La Stella pulled the Angels even with a blooper into right-center field that Mookie Betts was unable to make a diving catch on. Trout grounded into a force out, breaking the tie.

Buehler was lifted that point and the book ultimately closed on him at five runs (four earned) allowed over 4.2 innings. If there was a positive to take from the outing, he had five strikeouts and issued just one walk.

Caleb Ferguson, Brusdar Graterol, Jake McGee and Kenley Jansen followed Buehler with 5.1 scoreless innings to keep the Dodgers in position for their win.
