Freddie Freeman: Ankle Surgery ‘Worth It’ For World Series Win

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Thursday that Freddie Freeman underwent surgery on his right ankle for debridement and to remove loose bodies from the area.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Kenneth Jung at Kerlan Jobe in Los Angeles. Freeman is expected to be able to participate in baseball activities during Spring Training.

He played through immense discomfort throughout the postseason and required hours of daily treatment just to be able to play. Even through the pain, Freeman’s performance in the World Series earned him MVP honors, including a historic walk-off grand slam in Game 1.

Freeman posted to social media on Thursday, highlighting the necessary surgery and pain he dealt with was worth it, considering the outcome.

Freeman also dealt with a hairline fracture on his finger and before the playoffs, broke a rib that he continued to play through.

In 147 games this past season, Freeman batted .285/.373/.525 with 22 home runs, 89 RBI with 81 runs scored over 638 plate appearances.

During the World Series, Freeman went 6-for-20 with a triple, four home runs and 12 RBI against the New York Yankees.

Freeman is a fan favorite with the Dodgers, and his heroic play earned a special place in franchise history with how gutsy his performance was. Still under contract through the 2027 season, Freeman’s style of play should continue to be a steadying force in a lineup filled with power bats.

With his offseason surgery, Freeman joins Shohei Ohtani and Brusdar Graterol as Dodgers to have procedures after their World Series campaign.

Freddie Freeman’s 2024 season

Freeman ranked third in Major League Baseball with a 137 wRC+, an .854 on-base plus slugging and a .281 expected batting average. His 1.67 win probability added ranked second in the NL.

He was one of four Dodgers to receive MVP votes, garnering one vote each for eighth, ninth and 10th place.
