In order to acquire best starting pitcher who was moved at this year’s MLB trade deadline, the Los Angeles Dodgers sent Trey Sweeney and Thayron Liranzo to the Detroit Tigers for Jack Flaherty.

The prospect cost to trade for Flaherty was widely considered relatively modest when compared to other deals involving starters. That held all the more true when also taking into account the Dodgers pulled from positions of depth in their farm system.

For the Tigers, they added two players who conceivably could contribute in the future as the 2024 season is effectively another lost year.

With that, Sweeney now is going to get an opportunity to make his MLB debut as the Tigers are recalling the young shortstop, according to Kiley McDaniel of ESPN:

The Tigers are calling up SS Trey Sweeney to the big leagues, per source. The former first rounder has been on a tear of late and was one of two prospects coming from the Dodgers in return for Jack Flaherty.

Prior to the trade, Sweeney spent all of the 2024 Minor League season with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He hit .254/.334/.427 with 22 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs and 62 RBI over 96 games.

There was some belief Sweeney could factor into the Dodgers’ plans this season as the shortstop position was somewhat unsettled, but that never came to fruition.

In 11 games with the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate, he’s batted .381/.447/.667 with six doubles, two home runs and nine RBI.

Trey Sweeney’s career

The New York Yankees picked Sweeney at No. 20 overall in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft. Sweeney was traded to the Dodgers in a December 2023 deal that sent Victor González and Jorbit Vivas to the Yankees.

While he arrived with a high pedigree, Sweeney ultimately was in a crowded group of shortstop prospects within the Dodgers farm system. That group now consists of Joendry Vargas, Alex Freeland and Emil Morales.
