Expanded Dodgers Roster: Kolten Wong Called Up, Yonny Hernández Removed From 40-Man

Kolten Wong was added to the expanded Los Angeles Dodgers roster for September and outrighted Yonny Hernández to Triple-A Oklahoma City after he cleared waivers. Hernández was involved as the corresponding move to make room for Wong on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.

Wong signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers one week after being released by the Seattle Mariners upon getting designated for assignment and clearing waivers.

It marked the end of a disappointing tenure with the Mariners, who acquired Wong in a trade last December with the Milwaukee Brewers for Jesse Winker and Abraham Toro.

That came one month after the Brewers exercised their $10 million team option on Wong for the 2023 season. It was part of a two-year, $18 million contract Wong signed with the Brewers in February 2021.

He hit a combined .262/.337/.439 with 56 doubles, six triples, 29 home runs, 97 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 250 games over two seasons with the Brewers.

The Mariners hoped Wong would provide some stability at second base despite the fact that he was coming off a down year defensively. Wong eliminated some of his trouble with errors but still graded out as league average or below in several defensive metrics.

Furthermore, he hit just .165/.241/.227 with six doubles, two home runs and 19 RBI over 67 games for the Mariners this season.

After signing with the Dodgers, Wong reported to Camelback Ranch to work with some of the organization’s hitting instructors. He went 7-for-13 with two doubles and six RBI over three games with Triple-A Oklahoma City before having his contract selected by the Dodgers.

Hernández joined the Dodgers organization this past December via trade with the Oakland Athletics. He’s appeared in 14 games over two stints with L.A. this season.

While with Oklahoma City, Hernández has hit .252/.407/.363 with 13 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 30 RBI in 76 games.

Dodgers add Sheehan

As for the extra pitcher added onto the Dodgers roster, the spot went to Emmet Sheehan. The rookie is expected to pitch bulk innings against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, whether as a starter or out of the bullpen.
