Hall of Fame broadcaster Mike Breen was presented with the Vin Scully Award for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting from Fordham University radio station WFUV on Tuesday night. Breen is in his 30th season calling New York Knicks games for MSG and also has been ESPN’s lead NBA broadcaster since 2006.

Scully began his Hall of Fame broadcasting career at Fordham before going on to spend 67 years as the voice of the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. Breen additionally graduated from Fordham and became just the second alumnus to receive the honor given by the university’s media station.

“When you are a Fordham graduate, a WFUV alumnus, and a play-by-play broadcaster, receiving an award named after Mr. Scully is the highest honor I could ever receive,” Breen said in a statement.

“Mr. Scully’s talent and skill on the air, and his character and integrity as a man, has made him the ultimate role model for me and countless broadcasters that span over generations. I am so humbled and grateful for this incredible honor.”

Past recipients of the Vin Scully Award include Scully himself (2008), Dick Enberg (2009), Ernie Harwell (2010), Pat Summerall (2011), Al Michaels (2012), Bob Costas (2013), Verne Lundquist (2014), Mike “Doc” Emrick (2015), Brent Musburger (2016), Bob Wolff (2017), Michael Kay (2018) and Tim McCarver (2019).

Kay, who broadcasts New York Yankees games on YES Network and does national work for ESPN, is the only other Fordham alum to receive the Scully award.

Lakers honored Vin Scully before home opener

Scully, who passed away in August, was celebrated by the Los Angeles Lakers during their home opener of the 2022-23 NBA season against the L.A. Clippers at Crypto.com Arena.

A tribute video was played during the first timeout and featured several of Scully’s calls for not only Dodgers games, but also memorable moments in MLB history and the Super Bowl.
