Even after trading their top two prospects last season, the Los Angeles Dodgers still have one of the deepest farm systems in baseball, which was ranked No. 8 for the 2022 season by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel.

The Baltimore Orioles took the top spot, followed by the Tampa Bay Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates, Miami Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks, Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees. Rounding out the top 10 behind the Dodgers are the Cleveland Guardians and Texas Rangers.

Of the top-10 farm systems, only the Dodgers, Rays and Yankees made the postseason last year.

McDaniel cited the Dodgers’ player development system for their ability to turn average players into legitimate prospects, combined with their international and domestic scouting to continuously keep them ranked so well.

The Dodgers’ farm system is led by Diego Cartaya, who was ranked No. 26 overall by McDaniel and as high as No. 13 by Keith Law.

McDaniel gave Cartaya a 50 grade for hitting and 70 for power (20-80 scale). He also noted that Cartaya reminds him of the “2021 version of Salvador Perez.”

Joining Cartaya on McDnaiel’s top 100 list are Ryan Pepiot (No. 59), Bobby Miller (No. 61), Andy Pages (No. 68) and Michael Busch (No. 87).

McDaniel also wrote he is intrigued by Maddux Burns, the Dodgers’ first-round pick in 2021, who he says has arguably the best raw stuff but worst command of the prep pitchers who were picked last year.

The notable absence from McDaniel’s top-100 list is Miguel Vargas, who was ranked as the Dodgers’s top prospect by Baseball Prospectus. Law also ranked Eddys Leonard within his top 100 prospects, but most lists put him just outside the top 100 right now.

Baseball America ranks Dodgers farm system inside top 10

The Dodgers were also ranked as the No. 8 farm system by Baseball America, which cited the Dodgers “impact talent” as the reason to them making the top 10.

Baseball America specifically pointed out Cartaya, Vargas and Michael Busch as impact position players; and Bobby Miller, Ryan Pepiot and Landon Knack as impact pitchers. The publication ranked included all but Knack in their top-100 prospect rankings for the 2022 season.
