Dustin May ‘Excited’ To Join Dodgers Rotation; Wasn’t Aware Of Immaculate Inning

The Los Angeles Dodgers are set to activate Dustin May from the 60-day injured list on Saturday for a start against the Miami Marlins at Dodger Stadium. It will mark the right-hander’s first outing at the Major League level since May 1, 2021.

The Dodgers maintained a cautious approach throughout May’s rehab process from Tommy John surgery even while losing Walker Buehler and Clayton Kershaw to injuries. Kershaw remains on the mend, but Buehler is poised to undergo season-ending elbow surgery next week.

As for May, his rehab assignment began with the Arizona Complex League Dodgers on July 16., and he went on to make five additional starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City. May threw 70 pitches over five innings on Sunday for his final tuneup and completed an additional 10 throws in the bullpen.

May is in position to take on a normal workload upon being activated and credited the Dodgers for putting him in the best spot to succeed, via SportsNet LA:

“I’m excited. I couldn’t have gotten any more prepared in the Minor Leagues than I did. I’m in the best spot possible to come back and help the team.”

May finished with 10 strikeouts over five innings and allowed just one run in his final rehab start against the Round Rock Express (Texas Rangers affiliate). May pitched an immaculate inning, which he didn’t realize until after being removed from the game:

“Honestly, I didn’t even know that I had done it until I was finished and (Dave) Borkowski came up to me and told me that I did it. I was like, ‘That’s pretty neat.’ I hadn’t done that before, so it was definitely pretty cool to hear.”

May accomplished the feat in the second inning, with all three of his strikeouts coming looking. He became the second Oklahoma City Dodgers pitcher to achieve the rare accomplishment, joining Caleb Ferguson, who threw an immaculate inning on May 27.

May enjoyed productive rehab assignment

May allowed just three runs over 16 innings pitched (1.69 ERA) and collected 26 strikeouts in his six rehab starts. He will now look to pick up where he left off in L.A., where he posted a 2.74 ERA, 3.30 FIP and 0.96 WHIP in 23 innings before his injury last season (five starts).
