Dodgers Vs. White Sox Game Preview: Tony Gonsolin Tries To Play Stopper

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue their series with the Chicago White Sox after falling 4-0 in the opener and look to snap a three-game losing streak.

Tony Gonsolin again tries to be the stopper as he makes his 11th start of the season and first career appearance against the White Sox. The 28-year-old has been nothing short of spectacular thus far as he enters play with a 6-0 record, 1.59 ERA, 3.04 FIP and 0.88 WHIP over 51 innings pitched.

Gonsolin is coming off a dominant outing against the New York Mets in which he allowed only two hits over six scoreless innings. That was despite the right-hander not being pleased with the feel of his offspeed pitches.

“I wasn’t really throwing anything offspeed for strikes, honestly,” Gonsolin said after the game. “Curveball was high, slider was not great.

“Splitter was OK, threw it for some strikes when I needed to, and it worked out well when I needed to. But the fastball ultimately was the savior.”

The White Sox counter with Johnny Cueto, who now is pitching for his fourth team in his 15th MLB season. In four starts for Chicago, he has gone 0-2 with a 2.92 ERA, 3.10 FIP and 1.26 WHIP over 24.2 innings.

Cueto took a hard-luck loss in his last start against the Toronto Blue Jays, giving up four runs runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings of work.

The 36-year-old owns a 9-9 record, 3.76 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 122 strikeouts in 139 innings pitched across 24 career starts against the Dodgers.

Yasmani Grandal and AJ Pollock both are in the lineup after each didn’t start Tuesday night. Pollock did make a pinch-hit appearance and sparked the White Sox to a win with his two-run double.
