Dodgers Vs. Rockies Game Preview: Clayton Kershaw Starts Road Trip Opener

After taking two out of three from the Houston Astros, the Los Angeles Dodgers now start a six-game road trip that begins with a series against the Colorado Rockies. L.A. is 19-19 on the road this season, and overall are 5-5 in their last 10 games.

The Dodgers look to begin their latest stretch away from Dodger Stadium on a positive note as Clayton Kershaw takes the mound for his 16th start of the season. The future Hall of Famer has been nothing short of impressive in recent outings.

Over his last three starts, Kershaw has logged 20 innings with 19 strikeouts and allowed just two runs. He enters 9-4 with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP.

Coors Field historically has not been kind to Kershaw, as with many starting pitchers. He is 11-8 with a 4.82 ERA in the Rockies’ home ballpark. Kershaw’s pitching statistics are his highest across the board in Coors Field compared to any other stadiums in the National League West.

The Rockies counter with Connor Seabold, a California State University, Fullerton product and Southern California native. His last three starts have not been pretty, as Seabold has allowed 12 runs over 15 innings.

Seabold’s last start against the NL-leading Atlanta Braves was particularly tough, as he gave up nine earned runs in just three innings.

The Rockies are 31-49 in the NL West, putting them dead last. They are 2-8 in their previous 10 games. Despite playing in what is considered the most friendly offensive ballpark in Major League Baseball, they are 15th overall in runs scored, 15th in on-base plus slugging percentage and 25th in home runs.

The Rockies’ 5.66 team ERA is the second-highest in baseball, behind only the Oakland Athletics. Colorado are 29th in home runs allowed and dead last in hits given up.

The Dodgers have not been much better in the pitching department, despite recent signs of improvement. They are 24th in ERA, 14th in hits allowed and 21st in home runs. A trip to Coors Field may not be the best remedy for the Dodgers pitching staff.

Offensively, the Dodgers are tied for fourth in MLB in runs scored, averaging 5.31 per game. They are led by Freddie Freeman, who despite a .231/.310/.462 slash line over his last seven games, collected his 2,000th career hit on Sunday.

The Rockies lineup is anchored by Ryan McMahon, whose 114 OPS+ and 12 home runs lead the team. Elias Díaz has impressive numbers against Kershaw, going 6-for-12 against him with a home run.

The Dodgers are 6-4 in their last 10 games against the Rockies.

Prior to first pitch the Dodgers activated Max Muncy off the 10-day injured list and optioned Michael Busch to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
