Dodgers Vs. Mets Game Preview: Facing Max Scherzer For First Time Since Ejection

After winning the first two games of the series, the Los Angeles Dodgers look to complete a sweep of the New York Mets at Citi Field. First pitch was originally scheduled for 10:40 a.m. PT, but got pushed back to 2:30 p.m. due to inclement weather.

This comes after Saturday’s game was delayed 46 minutes due to rain as well. Overall, four of the Dodgers’ last seven road games have been delayed by inclement weather.

Bobby Miller makes his ninth start of the season and hopes to bounce back from an inconsistent outing against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The right-hander endured some early struggles as he allowed a pair of home runs that put the Dodgers in a 4-0 deficit by the fourth inning.

Miller then proceeded to retire the next eight batters, with the streak ending on a two-out walk in the sixth inning. He also retired six of seven batters faced in between surrendering the two home runs.

Miller has struggled over his last four starts but is using his mistakes as a learning experience. “Just figuring out who I am at this level,” he said after his start against the Pirates.

“I’m figuring out how to mix better. I think I did a better job of that today. I thought the fastball was a lot better, and fastball command. I was able to move it around the whole strike zone. Just a couple bad pitches, I thought. I thought my command was a little bit better.”

Miller enters at 5-1 with a 4.50 ERA, 3.71 FIP and 1.23 WHIP in 44 innings pitched this season. He is making his first career start against the Mets.

New York counters with Max Scherzer, who is trying to start the second half on a good note. The three-time Cy Young Award winner did not pitch to standards during the unofficial first half, going 8-3 with a 4.31 ERA, 4.54 FIP, 1.23 WHIP and 10.4 strikeouts per nine in 87.2 innings pitched (16 starts).

Scherzer, who is in his second season with the Mets after a brief stint with the Dodgers, threw three scoreless innings against his former team at Dodger Stadium on April 19. The future Hall of Famer’s outing was cut short after he was ejected due to using foreign substances.

Scherzer is 5-5 with a 2.51 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 10.1 strikeouts per nine in 17 career appearances against the Dodgers (15 starts). Scherzer is facing the Dodgers for the first time since his ejection at Dodger Stadium due to the umpires’ belief he violated the foreign substances rule.
