The Los Angeles Dodgers finished 4-2 on their six-game homestand, but lost two of three in their series with the Colorado Rockies. The story from Wednesday night’s game, as it has been all season, was the Dodgers’ inability to score runs.

The Dodgers were blanked 1-0 despite a strong outing from right-hander Kenta Maeda, who went 6.2 innings while allowing one run on an RBI single by first basemen Daniel Descalso in the seventh inning.

Prior to that at-bat, Descalso and Maeda were involved in one of the more unusual plays this season. In the bottom of the fifth, Maeda came up in a bunt situation with runners on first and second base with one out.

He laid the bunt down toward Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado, who fielded the ball and threw over to first. The only problem was there were two players covering first, Descalso and second basemen DJ LeMahieu.

LemMahieu was the one to catch the ball, but he wasn’t on the base. Realizing this, he tried to shovel the ball at the last minute to Descalso, but it was too late as Maeda was safe:

While an embarrassing mistake, it did not prove to be a pivotal one as Chris Rusin worked his way out of the jam. This was not the only odd occurrence during Wednesday’s game as Adam Liberatore thought he was being summoned from the bullpen during a mound visit from manager Dave Roberts.
