The Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen failed to protect a 3-0 lead Wednesday night, washing away the six dominant innings Alex Wood provided in just his third start of the season. But there was little time to rest following their walk-off loss to the San Francisco Giants.
The four-game series at AT&T Park concluded Thursday afternoon, in a matchup between southpaws Julio Urias and Matt Moore. For Urias, it was his first Major League start of the season. He allowed one run, and had four strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
If not for an errant pickoff attempt, the young left-hander may have completed six scoreless innings. To that point, Corey Seager’s solo home run in the first inning had held up.
Mark Melancon and Kenley Jansen each tossed a scoreless ninth inning, and the Dodgers and Giants went into extra innings a second consecutive game.
Adrian Gonzalez led off the 10th with a walk, Chase Utley reached on an infield single, and Yasmani Grandal walked to load the bases with nobody out. Pinch-hitter Andrew Toles hit a go-head single into right-center field, and it led to more scoring.
Utley, who inexplicably did not score on Toles’ base hit, did so on a Kiké Hernandez foul out down the first-base line. Utley’s cause was aided by Buster Posey making the juggling catch with his back to home plate.
Justin Turner extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI single, and Chris Taylor worked a walk to bring in the Dodgers’ fourth run of the inning. Los Angeles went on for a 5-1 victory, earning a series split.
