While the Los Angeles Dodgers have received contributions throughout their lineup in recent weeks, Cody Bellinger has drawn the majority of the headlines, and deservedly so. Bellinger produced again Tuesday night but took a backseat to teammate Corey Seager.
Seager opened the scoring, slugging a two-run home run off Mets starter Robert Gsellman. It was the start of a big performance for Seager and a long night for Gsellman. The 2016 National League Rookie of the Year homered again in the fourth inning.
Seager clubbed another opposite-field shot in the fifth. It was his fifth multi-home run game and second career three-homer game. Seager said postgame his timing at the plate was improved this week when compared to other points in the season.
“I think Seager got mad and decided to give some balls away,” Brandon McCarthy joked when asked about Bellinger’s and Seager’s production.
Yasmani Grandal also clubbed a home run, which was his first since June 2. The extra-base hit was Grandal’s first since June 7. The Dodgers matched a season high with their five home runs.
Bellinger’s two-run homer in the first inning gave him 10 homers in as many games. He became the second Dodgers player all-time to accomplish the feat. Shawn Green did so in May 2002.
On Monday, Bellinger became the fastest player to 21 career home runs (51 games). He leads the NL with 22 home runs and is second to only New York Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge, who’s slugged 24 homers.
