Dodgers Updates: Blake Treinen, Tyler Glasnow, Evan Phillips, Teoscar Hernández & Tommy Edman

The Los Angeles Dodgers are set to activate Clayton Kershaw off the 60-day injured list for his first start of the season on Saturday, but they remain without Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, Blake Treinen and Evan Phillips, among other pitchers.

There has been recent progress with Glasnow and Snell both beginning throwing programs. Snell played catch from flat ground again on Thursday, his second time since receiving medical clearance to do so.

Snell still faces a prolonged recovery, and that also applies to Glasnow, Treinen and Phillips as well.

Meanwhile, Teoscar Hernández (left groin strain) and Tommy Edman (right ankle inflammation) are both on the mend and could return before the Dodgers finish their homestand.

Dodgers injury news

Tommy Edman

Edman took at-bats against Dodgers pitching prospect Maddux Bruns on Thursday. He also participated in live batting practice against Emmet Sheehan on Wednesday.

“I don’t expect Tommy to do a rehab, but he’s getting close,” manager Dave Roberts said.

Teoscar Hernández

Hernández also took at-bats against Sheehan and Bruns over the last two days. But unlike Edman, Hernández is expected to join a Minor League affiliate prior to getting activated.

“Teo, I’m gathering that a rehab of a couple games potentially might happen,” Roberts said. “So with that, he probably won’t be back until next week. But it’s a day-to-day situation.”

If Hernández does go out on a rehab assignment, it’s likely to come with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.

Tyler Glasnow

Glasnow played catch on Thursday but his outlook and timeline remains open-ended as the Dodgers attempt to find an answer over what’s ailing him.

“I don’t know when that’s going to be,” answered Roberts when asked when Glasnow will start to pitch off a mound.

“But from what I hear, the catch play, the flat-ground stuff has been good. “I’m not sure when he’s going to get on the mound, though.”

Blake Treinen

Immediately after placing Treinen on the 15-day injured list because of right forearm tightness, the Dodgers indicated he faced a prolonged absence. Treinen then was transferred to the 60-day IL on May 1.

After weeks of being shut down from throwing, the right-hander is poised to begin his progression.

“He should be picking up a ball in the next few days,” Roberts said. “I was just in the weight room with him, he was doing the plyos, and looks great. He’s getting antsy.”

Perhaps most encouraging, Treinen is no longer dealing with any discomfort in his right forearm.

“He is pain-free. I asked him that specifically,” Roberts added.

Treinen is not eligible to be reinstated from the 60-day injured list until June 18.

Evan Phillips

While there has been positive developments with some injured Dodgers pitchers, Phillips is not part of that group.

“We’re nowhere further than we were the last couple days, so we’re in a holding pattern,” Roberts said.

An MRI on Phillips’ right elbow revealed inflammation that prompted the Dodgers to shut him down from throwing for the time being.
